Summer 2016: An American Cinderella
Hollywood in the 1930s was a world of contrasts: while the film industry’s revenues protected Los Angeles from the Great Depression, the city struggled with providing for its estimated 10,000 homeless on Skid Row. The MSD updated version reflected this dichotomy: a young girl from the streets is whisked into the limelight of Hollywood by chance. The Happily-Ever-After of the animated version didn't come so quickly, however. In Act Two, the young girl—now a celebrity—sought some kind of real connection within her glittery, new environment.
